Shameless Plug on an Important Issue
I was deeply influenced by Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of our Discontent, which provided a framework for me to examine what I had seen and heard among my family and community members. So I’m thrilled to see that policies and conversations focused on anti-caste discrimination are gaining momentum and attention in the United States. I had the honor of learning more about this issue from Thenmozhi Soundarajan and Yashica Dutt when I guest hosted an episode of Our Body Politic.
Thenmozi shared her own and others’ experiences with caste discrimination here in the United States and discussed how Dalit and Black civil rights struggles are linked. Yashica talked about how shows like Indian Matchmaking make caste seem like a simple criteria rather than the oppressive system it is. The full episode just dropped, and I hope you’ll listen to it on your favorite platform. You can check it out here!
