WTF is Supererogation?
Everyday, I am reminded that there is so much more to learn from and about the world.
Just this week, in my word a day email, this word popped up:
Supererogation
Do you know what it means? It's like someone coined a word for us No. 1s. But also an important reminder in these times, as we all want (and need) to respond, act, stay on top of what's happening.
Supererogation = "The performance of more work than duty requires."
As in:
Her head hurt and she was hungry but without supererogation, she never felt she had done enough.
The team meetings offered an opportunity for check-ins but also felt like an opportunity to share acts of supererogation.
You get the idea. I am going to work on deprogramming from supererogation. 10/10 recommend.
Now, for staying vigilant and being prepared. Here are some resources for what you can do:
Get educated on what to do if ICE is (actually) at the door, donate to a local immigrant bond fund or nonprofit, and support immigrant-owned businesses (tips from Epicenter, an important resource for NYers with applicability nationwide; consider subscribing to this important community media resource!)
Participate in the nationwide economic boycott on Friday, February 28. More on this initiative and how to use your dollars to make sense, here.
Listen to in-depth coverage from women guests on The Electorette. Host Jenn Taylor-Skinner talks with authors, journalists and elected officials about civil rights, reproductive justice, climate change and more.
Consider downloading and saving your social security statement from SSN.Gov. Many including my friend Sujata Tejwani (subscribe to her Substack for culture recs with a dose of social justice!) have recommended this… you just never know when you might need it!
Together, stronger, always.
