I can’t stop thinking about a world without my friend and LGBTQ activist Urvashi Vaid and community activist Pearly Young. Both of them died on Saturday, after a lifetime of service to their communities and both of their lives were shaped by the human-made illness of hate.
Anti-blackness and homophobia are symptoms of white supremacy, a global disease with uniquely American contours. Gun violence, racial capitalism, misogyny. Acknowledging this, and its impact on us as no.1 immigrant daughters – Black, Brown, Asian – is a critical part of our healing and growing process.
Urvashi spent her adult life fighting for gay rights, a fierce and loving soul who is being honored with public tributes and obituaries. Pearly Young, also known as Miss Pearly, ran a food pantry for 25 years and is in the nation’s hearts because of her senseless death.
My soul is grieving, and my heart is broken, for Urvashi and Miss Pearly and for the nine other victims of the Buffalo shooting. I imagine you’re hurting too. I encourage you to take the time you need, alone and in community.
With love,
Sayu
Great losses indeed. I had the privilege of having lunch with Urvashi over 20 years ago and she left an indelible mark on me. I was shocked and saddened by the news.
