Resetting the Clock
Happy back to school month! And no, you didn’t miss something; it’s not time to adjust your clock for daylight savings time!
As we go into the new year (I still think of September as a new year, after many years of being in school and having a child in school), I wanted to share a technique I recently adopted.
You might be familiar with having a plan for how you want your day to go and then having it be derailed by a text, email, phone call or a conversation at home. “There goes my plan for [fill in the blank],” you think! And you succumb to the energy of that crisis. This used to be me, more often than I like to remember. For me, “the plan” is often to write, but after looking at email, hanging around at the breakfast counter talking about things unrelated to the brilliant thoughts I went to bed and woke up with, I’m suddenly unable to focus.
But recently, I learned I can trick myself into resetting the clock.
Here’s how I do that - take a shower, journal, pull a tarot card and journal, or even get back into bed and restart the day after a nap. I’ve tried this at all times of day and found it really works. It’s much better than spending the whole day irritated that I lost my mojo. Some crises require your full attention, but most things that interrupt our flow can be set aside after we reset the clock. Let me know if you try this, and if so, what strategies you use to “reset”.
