Reclaim Your Routine!
Hey y’all. I kind of had nothing to say but I thought it would be helpful to share that. September flew by, and October is off to a frenetic start. We seem to be back to a pre-pandemic pace, and it all feels so much more frustrating because we know that it’s possible to do things differently. And yet…here we are.
I did some triage to my schedule in early October and am going to offer three ideas here that may help. They’re not new, but a reminder always helps!
Return to a routine. After I make my morning coffee, I’m coming straight to my desk, pulling a tarot card for the day, and writing. Sometimes just a page in my journal, sometimes 500 words on a story I’m working on, sometimes notes on a speech I have to give. But it’s generative, healing, and/or thoughtful. What do you need to start your day right?
Buy yourself time. I’m a little obsessive about meal planning and prep. And frankly about a lot of things. But something had to give, and so my fridge now has a few pre-bought meals that my family or I can grab and heat. I don’t love it, but I also know it’s temporary and the joy of cooking will return when it’s a labor of love and not a harried task in between meetings. What’s taking up too much time in ways that are not serving you?
Choose fun. Make plans with your friends, go for walks, read. Do enough of what you want and enjoy to support those times when the work/life is hard and full of things you don’t really want to do. We’re all on a journey toward a life full of more what we choose, but it’s a journey, and often a privilege. So breathe, look at your calendar…what can you get rid of? How can you replace it with something fun or generative?
On the journey with you,
Sayu
