Life’s a Big Job
I have the most amazing people in my life. One of them is T. Morgan Dixon, founder of GirlTrek
Last week, we had a WhatsApp exchange about her work and words, both of which inspire me. I shared how happy I was not to be an executive director anymore, but also … my internal conflict about finding a big job versus doing what I do now - a little bit of this, a little bit of that.
Her response was as powerful as always. It’s stayed with me, and I wanted to share it with all of you.
Life’s a big job, joy’s a big job, do those.
Let that sink in. Life is a big job. The one we’re doing ALL the time. And as No. 1’s, we know how to do life well. Usually centering productivity, responsibility, commitment.
But what about Joy? That’s a big job too. And I’m going to guess you, like me, are not always as good at that one. Grief, overwhelm and exhaustion often win over joy, deep connections and true rest. What’s the skill set we need to do the job of joy? Being present is one skill I’m practicing.
I’m thinking of updating my resume to say:
Current Role (19xx-present): Doing Life, Practicing Joy.
With love,
Sayu
