Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re past your prime!
Just opening up with this quote from Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, because it bears highlighting.
We are coming up on one year of No. 1 Immigrant Daughter, the occasional message from me reflecting on how we can recognize patterns in ourselves that reflect our family roles. As is the case for many writers, these messages are my own way of growing and healing.
In fact, I recently heard the phrase writing troubles are life troubles. Ouch! And just last week, I saw this quote by Laurel Braitman, author of What Looks Like Bravery: “You can only write at the speed of your own self-awareness.” That fucking hurt. Because I can see how my writing is not going deep enough, how I’m not surrendering fully, holding back. And, that’s for sure a life trouble as much as it’s a writing trouble.
So, I wanted to lay this truth bare — my growth and healing has so far to go. All the tidbits I share, suggestions I make, I’m learning from those. I’m creating a framework for you as much as I am for myself. In April, I’m going to offer a three-part approach to shifting from our No.1 mindset, of doing and caring and organizing and holding it all.
Until then, I leave you with this quote from author and therapist Nedra Tawwab.
“Growth is not always saying the right thing. Growth is also being aware of our mistakes and taking steps to course correct when necessary.”
Thank you for being on this journey with me.
