Everything’s Trash
Here’s a quick roundup of stuff I’m watching, reading and speaking about.
Let’s start with the show after which this email is named. I binged on the entire season of this smart comedy with Phoebe Robinson, after learning about it from Roxanne Gay’s newsletter (to which you must subscribe for hot takes on all things). Everything’s Trash is a statement on our current situation, a fun exploration of life in politics (through Phoebe’s brother, who’s running for office), and a love letter to NYC.
I had a chance to talk about immigration, democracy and women of color on Our Body Politic with Farai Chideya a couple of weeks ago. It's real talk about how shit things are but I also hope some of the stories and actions inspire you. Listen here.
I have devoured several books in the last couple of weeks, but I want to lift up Deesha Philyaw’s The Secret Life of Church Ladies, which came out two years ago and is now being adapted into a dramatic series for HBO Max. For those of you who don’t have time to read, this is a perfect appetizer. You can dip in and out, or read the short captivating collection in one sitting.
Enjoy!
