Beloveds,
I have been silent. And raging. I don’t need to list it all here…you already know what is making you fearful, sad, angry. Natural and man-made disasters are not simply news. They are tragedies, from which some never recover. They are often the products of systemic failures, of willful ignorance, of deep-seated hatred.
But I’m not writing to tell you the things you know. I want to share things you may not know. Last week, I spent a few days in community with folks who have the same fellowship I have. And I learned about new projects that people are working on – to prevent organ removal from prisoners who die in custody (without their consent) or to counter the spread of Hindu nationalism (which has implications beyond South Asians) in the United States. The names of fellows working on these and other projects have not yet been announced publicly, so I’m not sharing them. Know that these are only two of the many projects dedicated to righting the many wrongs around us.
“Every inch of progress, every ounce of love, every truly meaningful action from here on out will happen through courage, not comfort.”
― Prentis Hemphill, What It Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World
Allow yourself the discomfort that comes from speaking up or doing something. Stay courageous. You are not alone.
In community,
Sayu
No, and they’re a lot of cracks.
