Have you been watching Gordita Chronicles? Newly released on HBO Max, it’s a perfect summer binge treat! Miami in the 1980s, immigrant stories, and a sassy main character who goes by Cucu–what’s not to love?
No spoiler alerts here, so keep on reading. Cucu is the younger of two sisters who move to Miami with their parents from the Dominican Republic and make their way through the not-so-glamorous-American-dream. Watching this show brought me back to my own version of this story; I too moved to Miami in the 1980s and helped myself and my family navigate America. This show is an intriguing twist on No. 1 – Cucu is not the first-born in the family, but is the most in-charge of figuring things out, leading the Conga line literally and figuratively.
Which brings me to how being a No. 1 is not about birth order. Sometimes, the oldest is not the primary cruise director, caretaker, advocate, or financial planner. And that’s just how it goes.
Check out Gordita Chronicles, and tune in to my IG Live this Friday 7/15 at 10:15am PT / 1:15pm ET with No. 1 immigrant daughter Nina Spensley and writer Claudia Forestieri, on whose life story the series is based.
Happy watching!

My wife grew up in Miami after moving from Peru. We'll definitely be checking this out. Thanks for the recommendation, Sayu!
