A Summer Assignment
Hey, y’all. We’re halfway through summer (at least according to what we socially consider summer) and it’s been a roller coaster ride. Plus mercury is in retrograde and unpredictable (and hopeful!) things are happening in politics here and around the world.
Some situations remain horrific and we can’t stop organizing. Not today, not tomorrow and definitely not after Election Day.
But for now, I invite you to try something for the remaining weeks of August: create space for play and/or rest each day and week. Here’s how to “find the time”.
Take a look at your calendar and find an hour that you can block every day. And I mean every day. Because you’ll end up skipping days and like exercise, if you plan for more, you’ll do just enough (is that only me?). I like early mornings, but maybe the middle or end of the day works better for you. Walk, read, write in your journal, play with your pet and/or kid, nap, sit in silence.
Next, see if there’s one day where you can expand that time to 3-4 hours. What could you do during that time? Take an online art class? Enjoy a movie alone. Go on a hike. Maybe you can’t manage it every week but try to block it and see how it goes.
Lastly, can you schedule this time through the rest of the year? Could you find one full day a month that you use to regroup and refuel? To just BE and not DO. How would that feel? Try it and let me know.
I know there are multiple genocides and a major election in the U.S. and countless other injustices that this community is fighting. But there is no justice without organizing, and there is no organizing without you and there is no you without rest. I want us to be healthier, more whole, more connected to our bodies, more grounded in who we are rather than what we do. Let’s do this.
Love,
Sayu
