No. 1 Immigrant Daughter in the White House!
Yes, it’s going to happen. But you know what? It will take a lot of work. And of course we’re not strangers to that. But it’s not just up to us. It’s also up to her.
Here’s what I’d like to see Vice President Harris do:
Name a VP pick that’s bold and brave, rather than tried and true. Give us a signal that you see an electorate that includes newly naturalized citizens, young people voting in their first election, and skeptical voters who don’t trust that government will act in their interests.
Take a trip to Michigan and meet with Arab American voters. Talk to them about how this and future Administrations can make meaningful (not lip service) shifts in America’s relationship with Israel, struggles with Islamophobia and antisemitism, and recognition of Palestine.
Repair the hurt caused by her comments in Guatemala by showing compassion and empathy for new arrivals and for signaling a forward-thinking approach to immigration in her administration.
In return, here’s what we can do:
Lift up all that the VP has done to advance women’s reproductive rights and other critical issues like climate justice
Respect voters who are just not going to move in their support for the top of the ticket, but encourage them to vote down ballot for other races
Check folks when they’re critiquing “something about her” as opposed to her policy positions i.e. be vigilant about dog whistles related to her race and gender.
It’s going to be a long 100+ days. But we are literally fighting for our lives. So let’s go!
